Students with any of the symptoms below should stay home from school:

• Fever greater than 100.4 degrees, including a fever with a new rash, within the previous 24 hours

• Vomiting more than twice in the preceding 24 hours

• Diarrhea that causes accidents, is bloody, or results in greater than two bowel movements above what the child normally experiences in a 24-hour period

• Skin sores that are draining fluid on an uncovered part of the body and are unable to be covered with a bandage

• Respiratory virus symptoms that are persistent or worsening and are not better explained by another cause such as seasonal allergies, including: uncontrolled coughing, persistent sore throat, significant congestion, or general fatigue that limits functioning and focus.

• Signs of general illness:

  • The child’s needs while sick will interfere with his ability to comfortably participate in the activities of the school day.

  • The child shows an acute change in behavior: lethargy, lack of responsiveness, quickly spreading rash, etc.

Students may return to TCA when:

• The child has not had a fever (and is not using fever-reducing medicine) for at least 24 hours.

• Fever with a new rash has been evaluated by a healthcare provider and fever has resolved.

• Uncovered skin sores are crusting, and the child is under treatment from a provider.

• Vomiting has resolved overnight and the child can hold down food/liquids.

• Diarrhea has improved, and the child is no longer having 'accidents' or is having bowel movements no more than 2 above normal per 24-hour period for the child. Bloody diarrhea should be evaluated by a healthcare provider prior to return.

• Respiratory virus symptoms have been steadily improving for at least 24 hours. 

• Students diagnosed with illnesses, infections, or conditions that are contagious such as strep throat, conjunctivitis, head lice, influenza, and covid are required to notify TCA as soon as possible. Parents may not allow students to return to school until cleared by the student’s physician.
